Learning programmes for Key Stages 1 and 2

Children's fun day out in the forestAt Alice Holt we offer a whole range of exciting programmes for Primary
School children. We can help you teach many different aspects of the national curriculum through hands on games and activities which are fun for children. We have 8 basic programmes which are themes rather than set activities, enabling us to plan the precise content of each programme to suit each individual group.

In addition we will create special tailor made programmes on request.Education for Sustainable Development plays a part in all school visits to Alice Holt. All our programmes are designed for full day visits but are easily adapted for half days. In addition elements from 2 different programmes can be combined to create the programme you need. You can view our Primary Schools brochure here and download a copy (1256k) if you wish.

Programmes for Key Stages 1 and 2 are as follows:

Smell touch and feel. Exploring the forest.Super Sensations is all about using the 5 senses to explore the forest and discover fascinating facts about its trees, plants and animals. This programme is suitable for KS1 in particular but is also ideal for any classes wanting a broad introduction to the forest.Blindfold games and smelly cocktails are particularly popular!

Tree stumps, annual rings and 'seedling children' feature prominently. Suitable for all KS1 and KS2.Pupil studying a dead vole found on minibeast hunt at Forest School

Forest Homes is about habitats and their variety, food
chains and webs, and the animals that live in the forest.
Activities include minibeast hunts and 'sculpture', becoming a forest animal and finding your ideal home, and getting tangled in a food web.Suitable for all KS1 and 2

Fantastic Forests gives children the opportunity to really let their imaginations go. After a morning discovering what a School visit to Alice Holt - Magic Paintingwonderful place the forest is, we enter the fantasy forest where we often encounter Ents or Minpin and always manage to find some tree friends.  The programme uses classic stories or traditional tales to introduce fantasy and activities include 'magic painting' in the woods to discover secret works of art, talking to tree friends and creating fantastic forest animals. It's great fun and will fuel creative work in the classroom in language and art. Suitable for all KS1 and 2 but most appropriate for children in Yr.3 and above.

Planet Earth or alternatively Amazing Americans is concerned with the importance of looking after our world and conserving natural resources for economic and environmental reasons. This can be approached through looking at some of the amazing features of Alice Holt Forest or alternatively through learning about Native Americans and how they lived in harmony with the environment. Children are encouraged to consider their own role in sustaining and improving the environment and KS2 pupils can take part in a critical thinking exercise to highlight the links between our own lifestyles and the state of the environment. This programme is suitable for all KS1 and KS2 children but most appropriate for Year 4 and above.

Marvellous Maps combines mapwork at appropriate levels for children throughout the Primary School with learning about different aspects of the forest. Full day visits include a poetry trail which is a version of orienteering undertaken in groups. Different courses are used to suit the age of the children. This activity combines a bit of literacy with map work so you needn't worry too much about missing your literacy hour!Children at Alice Holt with Saxon mini hurdles

Saxons Alive is a full day programme which brings the Anglo-Saxons to life. The children become Saxons for a day and experience something of what it was like to be a child in Saxon times. There are games to play, skills to learn such as hurdle making, and riddles and runes to read and write, and it's great fun!
