Fleet
The machine fleet includes 40 harvesters and 45 forwarders (purpose built timber harvesting machines), 80 civil engine- -ering machines, 25 cross-country carriers, 170 quads and 60 agricultural tractors. There are also 1700 road vehicles that are split into two distinct groups, 1500 business use vehicles and 200 management cars. The business use fleet comprises 20 lorries, 230 cars, 700 light vans, 230 pickups, 220 personnel carriers and 100 Landrovers. There is a further 3500 items of sundry equipment including lawnmowers, trailers, generators, fire-fighting equipment, etc.
Until 1997 all replacement machines and vehicles were funded by the Forestry Commission’s capital resource. Since then the fleet has been progressively converted to lease and most new vehicles and major machines are now leased. The total replace- -ment value of the fleet,expressed as an equivalent capital amount, is about £60m.
The Fleet Engineer is responsible for:
- Specification and procurement of vehicles
- procurement of machines, equipment and services
- ISO9001/2000 quality management system
- environmental standards within MES
- Health and safety standards
- Technical and statutory legislation
- monitoring fleet deployment and utilisation
