MES Workshops

Mechanical Engineering Services has workshops throughout Great Britain. Each has a highly skilled and well-motivated workforce that can support a wide range of machines and vehicles. Most have well equipped mobile workshops that are able to respond quickly to urgent repair requests in the field. Each workshop has developed specialisms, usually based on the Forestry Commission fleets that they support. They can carry out work in the private sector where resources permit.

Vehicles
: Each workshop has access to service information on most vehicles using the ‘Autodata’ computer system. Most have ‘Tecnotest Reflex’ electronic diagnostic equipment and staff trained in their use. Some have stocks of vehicle spares depending on their distance to suppliers. Makes supported include Citroen, Renault, Ford and Landrover.

Harvesting
: Most workshops are equipped to repair and maintain harvesting machinery and their staff are trained in the sophisticated hydraulic and electronic systems found on these machines. Most have spare parts for the machines that operate in the Forestry Commission fleet in their area. Makes supported are John Deere Harvesting (Timberjack), Ponsse, Valmet, Logset and others.

Civil Engineering: Selected workshops support civil engineering plant, mainly tippers, excavators, graders and rollers. Makes supported are Foden, Cat, JCB, Volvo, Dynapac, Hamm and others.

Forest Management
: Selected workshops support scarifiers, planting machines, cross country vehicles, nursery equipment, agricultural tractors, chainsaws and other sundry equipment.

Stores
: Each workshop has a stock of machine and vehicle parts. Some have arrangements with forestry machine suppliers to hold and sell parts on their behalf. All are connected to the DRIVE Stock Control computer system, which provides them with access to parts held throughout Mechanical Engineering Services stores. They all have stocks of lubricants, including biodegradable hydraulic and chain oils. Selected spare parts and lubricants are available for sale to the private sector.

Other
: Most workshops can repair machine and vehicle air conditioning systems. They are equipped with up-to-date charging rigs with full refrigerant recovery. All workshops can do welding repairs with Manual Metal Arc (MMA) equipment and most have Metal Inert Gas (MIG) equipment. All workshops have hydraulic hose repair equipment and an extensive stock of hydraulic hose and fittings.
