Getting started
Experts now agree that adults should take part in some form of physical activity for at least 30 minutes, five times a week and five hourly sessions for children.
We're not advocating you try to run a marathon in that time - far from it. But going for a walk in the woods will do both your body and mind a lot of good. A brisk 30-minute walk will burn more calories than 30 minutes of badminton. You'll fill your lungs full of fresh, clean air and lift your spirits as you take in the sights and smells of the forest. Low energy is a common complaint with today's hectic lifestyles. Exercising will actually give you more energy, but what is often lacking in all the worthy advice is the fact that you are far more likely to participate if you can have fun into the bargain. That's why many woodlands around the country organise activities for children. For example, Alice Holt woodland in Surrey, has Forest Fun sessions during the summer and a whole range of activities designed to keep you (joyfully) active whatever your age.
