Vehicles
The Mechanical Engineering Services fleet includes 1650 road vehiclesin use throughout the Forestry Commission. It comprises 650 car derived vans, 400 cars, 250 4 wheel drive pickups, 120 drop side pickups, 100 panel vans, 100 Land Rovers and 20 minibuses. Some of these are equipped for special purposes such as maintenance and repair of vehicles and machines, wild life management and collection of fly tipped waste. Car derived vans are fitted with sump guards and raised suspension to make them capable of withstanding the Forestry Commission’s arduous operating conditions.
Indeed most vehicles require some modifications or additional equipment fitted prior to delivery to end users. With the exception of 175 management cars, all vehicles are in Forestry Commission livery. Since 1997 the fleet has been progressively converted from Forestry Commission ownership to contract hire (leasing). The contract hire service providers are Lex Vehicle Leasing, Business Partner and Lombard Vehicle Management, and links to their web sites are available on this page. Contact thecontract hirer service providers (vehicle owners) if you are interested in purchase of used Forestry Commission vehicles. Maintenance and repair is done by a combination of Mechanical Engineering Services’ own workshops, local garages and franchised dealers. If you require vehicle maintenance or repair, contact your local Mechanical Engineering Services workshops. Vehicle modifications and conversions are done at Chapelhall Workshop.
